Genshin Impact is a free-to-play role-playing game developed by miHoYo. The game takes place in a fictional, mythical world called Teyvat. In this dimension, certain individuals are granted a Vision by the gods. Visions are magical gemstones that give their bearer the ability to control an element. You will start out as a Traveler who is searching for a lost sibling. It is up to you if you want to be a female or male version of the main character. 

What kind of game is Genshin Impact?

Genshin Impact takes place in Teyvat, a world blessed by seven Elemental Archons. In the distant past, the Archons granted mortals unique elemental abilities which allowed them to form a bountiful homeland out of the wilderness. However, the collapse of Teyvat has turned the universe upside down. The suffering has since ceased and the lands are slowly healing but peace has yet to be restored in Mondstadt, the City of Wind.

One of the Seven Archons' agents, the Fatui, has been oppressing the surrounding city-states under the guise of protection. You have woken up in Teyvat as a mortal without any idea of just where your sibling could be. As you find a way home, you will meet new characters and find out more about The Seven. It’s important to be on the lookout for clues as they will unearth something miraculous.

In this open-world game, you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled. You will also need to engage in real-time combat and forage for sustenance to boost your stats. As the story progresses, you will be able to play as the characters—or with other players—you meet along the way. Every Genshin Impact character has its own unique personality and special ability. Together, they will undertake quests to know more about the primordial gods of their world.

They're not easy to get, though, as some 5-star characters like Cyno and Ayaka are available for a limited time only. Fortunately, the second Wish Event banner type allows returning characters to be available much more frequently. This is great since some characters have element-specific abilities that would make them formidable opponents to dreaded enemies like the Abyss Heralds and Black Serpent Knights. 

The Masquerade of the Guilty

In Genshin Impact’s 4.2 update, players will be thrusted straight into the climax of the Fontaine Archon Quest. With this, players will be able to gain a better understanding of the region’s Archon, Furina—who will be made available in the first phase’s limited character event banner alongside the Dendro character, Baizhu, and the new 4-star Cryo catalyst, Charlotte—and will be able to explore two new areas filled with stunning views and even more mysteries to unlock. 

Following the completion of the latest Archon quest, players will also be able to unlock Furina’s dedicated story quest. The new areas will also unlock two new boss enemies, both of which have an affinity for Hydro. The All-Devouring Narwhal and Hydro Tulpa bosses will also provide drops that new characters will use in order to upgrade their stats and abilities. Meanwhile, in this update’s second phase, players will be able to pull for 5-star characters Cyno and Ayato in addition to their respective BiS weapons.

Players can also look forward to five thrilling events within this patch that will reward them with an array of rewards including Primogems, coins, as well as resource materials for characters and weapons alike. These events include the familiar Ley Line Overflow, where players can gain twice the drops from Ley Line challenges, and the Misty Dungeon: Realm of Water, where players will have the opportunity to test out various characters in domain challenges. 

In Thelxie's Fantastic Adventures event, players will have to participate in a number of mini-games in order to collect badges that they can exchange for rewards, as well as a free copy of the Fontaine character, Freminet. In the Graph Adversarial Technology Experiment Log event, on the other hand, you will have to make use of a special gadget to take images and collect samples from different subjects. Finally, Lil' Fungi's Fun-Tastic Fiesta will have you controlling adorable fungi to engage them in battle.

Grand addition to the RPG genre

Genshin Impact has similar elements to another action-adventure game called The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While this game also allows you to experience the world’s mythos, you will have full control over your first character, the Traveler, and the game’s other 30+ characters. Another difference is that cities and towns play a larger role in the storyline than BotW.
